How did minerals impact the political and economic trajectory of early modern Japan? This is one of the questions that Joshua Batts, a historian at the University of Barcelona, who specializes in Japan's engagement and estrangement during the early modern period, will answer in an upcoming event.
The event is organized by Tohoku University's Center for Integrated Japanese Studies (CIJS).
Batts will discuss his research field, mining in early modern Japan, exploring the relationship between metal, minerals and power in Japan from the 16th century through the 18th century. Comparative research and global Japanese studies, Batts will argue, bear immense importance in the study of "mineral politics."
The event is free of charge, and registration is not required.
